Cross stitch pattern chart - red Chandernagor indienne fabric motif - Museum and Heritage Collection
The word "indiennes" describes fabrics with exotic floral patterns which, in the 17th century, came from India through the different trading companies. Printed on fine cottons, then unknown in Europe, their shimmering patterns met with a dazzling success, to the point of harming French textile manufacturers. This led to what was called the “Indienne War,” which you can read about in our blog. Widely manufactured in Europe since the 18th century, these fabrics have retained the name "indienne fabrics" until today. We have named our motifs after Indian cities which all, directly or indirectly, have connections to the history of textiles.
This red Chandernagor motif is part of our spectacular pattern dedicated to indienne floral fabrics in the Museums and Heritage Collection. We also offer a printed fabric with this motif.
This full-colour pattern chart is printed with all necessary explanations on a 60 x 28 cm sheet, presented folded in a Sajou folder.
Size of motif: 185 stitches wide by 130 stitches high.
This pattern will allow you to make:
- a 30.8 x 21.7 cm cushion if you stitch the complete pattern chart on 12 threads per cm (32 count) embroidery linen;
- or use the repeat motif for a smaller or larger project. The repeat motif is 65 x 62 stitches, giving a size of 10.8 x 10.3 cm when embroidered on 12-count linen. To calculate the fabric needed, simply multiply the dimensions.
We recommend using our scarlet-coloured linen and our Retors du Nord embroidery thread. You will need the following colours: 2004, 2005, 2013, 2023, 2034, 2038, 2540, 2749, 2876; 9 cards.
This design is also available as a complete kit, including everything needed to make a cushion backed with cotton fabric.
In our Madame Sajou's Diary section, you can explore the history and development of these works, part of our Museums and Heritage Collection. You'll also find cultural and historical information about indienne floral motifs.
