Embroidery kit in cross stitch - red Chandernagor indienne fabric cushion - Museum and Heritage Collection
The word "indiennes" describes fabrics with exotic floral patterns which, in the 17th century, came from India through the different trading companies. Printed on fine cottons, then unknown in Europe, their shimmering patterns met with a dazzling success, to the point of harming French textile manufacturers. This led to what was called the “Indienne War,” which you can read about in our blog. Widely manufactured in Europe since the 18th century, these fabrics have retained the name "indienne fabrics" until today. We have named our motifs after Indian cities which all, directly or indirectly, have connections to the history of textiles.
This red Chandernagor cushion is part of our spectacular pattern dedicated to indienne fabrics. The fabric with the same motif is also available.
Size of motif: 185 stitches wide by 130 stitches high.
