Alsatian goose girl postcard - Haberdashery theme
This postcard is inspired by a vintage chromo illustration showing an Alsatian girl tending to her geese. She wears the famous traditional costume with its iconic large black bow, immediately recognisable as Alsatian.
Images like this were very popular in French advertising in the late 19th century, especially during the period when Alsace and part of Lorraine were annexed by the German Empire (from 1871 to 1918). Featuring Alsatian girls in adverts was a symbolic way to express the French attachment to these regions.
