Tonkin embroidery thread: a very original thread with a Lurex strand
Why the name Tonkin?
The Tonkin embroidery thread has a unique story. It has been produced for a long time by Ets. Toulemonde,
but was initially reserved for industrial use and did not have a specific name.
One day, during a visit to the factory, I discovered this thread in the middle of production
and immediately thought it would be perfect for embroiderers. A few weeks later, it became part of our collection.
The next step was to name it. After much thought, I decided to draw inspiration from Orientalism,
a style that was popular at the time Fil Au Chinois was created.
Tonkin, the former French protectorate in Indochina (1884), became the obvious choice.
This name is both a nod to that era and a reflection of the refinement of this unique thread.
The characteristics of Tonkin embroidery thread
Tonkin is a gimped thread made from textured polyester, giving it a slightly puffy appearance.
It contains a fine gold Lurex strand, which lends it unmatched elegance and brilliance.
Extremely pleasant to work with, it does not fray, unlike other metallic threads, making it especially popular among embroiderers.
Available in 24 colours, it is perfect for enhancing your creations, whether in traditional embroidery or bolder projects.
Its main strength? Versatility: in addition to embroidery, it is ideal for jewellery-making, such as bracelets.
Thanks to its polyester composition, it dries quickly, making it a favourite for professional use.
The different presentations of Tonkin thread
Tonkin embroidery thread is available on 10-metre cards sold individually.
There are also two assortments presented in elegant boxes that together include the entire range.
