Tonkin embroidery thread: a very original thread with a Lurex strand
Why the name Tonkin?
The Tonkin embroidery thread has a unique story. It has been produced for a long time by Ets. Toulemonde,
but was initially reserved for industrial use and did not have a specific name.
One day, during a visit to the factory, I discovered this thread in the middle of production
and immediately thought it would be perfect for embroiderers. A few weeks later, it became part of our collection.
The next step was to name it. After much thought, I decided to draw inspiration from Orientalism,
a style that was popular at the time Fil Au Chinois was created.
Tonkin, the former French protectorate in Indochina (1884), became the obvious choice.
This name is both a nod to that era and a reflection of the refinement of this unique thread.
The characteristics of Tonkin embroidery thread
Tonkin is a gimped thread made from textured polyester, giving it a slightly puffy aspect.
It contains a fine gold Lurex strand, which gives it unmatched elegance and brilliance.
Extremely pleasant to embroider with, it does not fray, unlike other metallic threads,
making it especially popular among embroiderers.
In addition to embroidery, it is ideal for jewellery-making, such as bracelets.
Thanks to its polyester composition, it dries quickly, making it a favourite among professionals.
We have been selling Tonkin thread since 2009.
In March 2025, 24 new colours will be added to the collection. Among these new shades, 12 are unique two-tone variations.
