Making our puffies in needlepoint

Never tried needlepoint before?

Our adorable puffies are the perfect opportunity to get started. They are great fun and quick to make. You just need a few tips: we’ve made a video to guide you step by step through one of our medallion puffies.

What you will need

Take a look at our puffies kits

On our 7 count/cm canvas, use four strands of thread..
You will never make knots.
Each square on the chart corresponds to one stitch. The colour references are listed alongside the chart.

Stitching the small motifs

The stitched Sajou puffie Petites Filles brodant and its chart
  • Start with the red dress of the little girl in the centre.
  • Cut a strand of colour 534 about 40cm long, separate two strands and fold them in half. Thread the needle at the folded end and pull through the loop so that the loose ends are near the eye.
  • Fold the canvas into quarters to find the centre, then unfold it. The middle point is where you will begin stitching.
  • Bring the needle from the back to the front, stitch diagonally, then pass the thread through the loop on the back to anchor it securely.
  • Stitch the two bottom lines of 6 stitches each at the same time, moving back and forth between them.
  • Add the line of 4 stitches above, then the next two stitches above
  • Stitch the right sleeve, then the left sleeve.
  • To fasten off, leave a loop at the back, pass the thread through it, pull tight and trim close.
  • Move onto the hair of this little girl.
  • Continue with the green dress, which is separated from the red one by 4 stitches: count them on the canvas and begin at the fifth hole. Stitch from bottom to top.
  • Stitch the orange dress in the same way.
  • Now stitch the arms and faces of the girls: begin with the green one (right arm, face, left arm). To go from the right arm to the face, pass the thread on the back under the already stitched areas. This gives a neater finish.
  • To move on to the red-dressed girl, carry the thread across the back — it will be covered later by stitches.
  • Do the same to connect the arms of the orange-dressed girl.
  • Stitch the black line beneath the girls and the four stitches on either side.
  • Stitch “20 ANS” in red, then the black stitches surrounding the text.
  • Work the black hair of the girl in the orange dress.
  • Below “20 ANS”, stitch the checkered motif in colour 120 and colour 444
  • Add the hair to the girl in the green dress.
  • Stitch the grey needle in the hand of the green-dressed girl, and the two grey stitches inside the “U” of SAJOU.
  • Stitch the word SAJOU in blue, leaving out the grey areas in the “O” and “S”.
  • Stitch the needles held by the other two girls, then complete the final grey stitches of the word SAJOU.
  • Stitch the double blue circle surrounding the design.

Stitching the white background

Important: in needlepoint, whenever possible, avoid stitching in horizontal lines. Working diagonally ensures a more even result and helps prevent distortion.

  • For the white background, start on the right and stitch diagonally, as shown in the video.
  • Finish with the orange circle.
  • Then stitch the outer white circle:
    • Start with the right-hand section in diagonal stitches,
    • Work the outer round all the way around,
    • Then fill in the interior using diagonal stitches, again as demonstrated in the video.
  • And that’s it! All that’s left is to assemble your puffie.

This method also applies to stitching the other designs.

Helpful tip: it can be tempting to stitch several elements of the same colour that are far apart from each other. However, this is almost always a source of mistakes. It’s better to progress by stitching adjacent elements, even if it means threading the same colour several times.

If you need to undo some stitches, we recommend using a precision seam ripper, taking care not to damage the canvas weave.
