Cross stich kits and pattern charts - Indienne floral fabrics
Cross-stitch patterncharts and kits on the theme of fabrics
The eighth chart in our Museums and Heritage Collection is dedicated entirely to textiles! It highlights the indiennes, those floral fabrics with rich, colourful patterns that have captivated Europeans since their discovery in the late 17th century. These fabrics originated from the cities along the Coromandel coast and were introduced through the various East India companies, with the French East India Company being founded by Colbert in 1664. Though quickly produced in Europe, these fabrics retained the name indienne, referring both to the fabrics themselves and the garments made from them. Among these indiennes, a standout: Marie Antoinette's Pineapple at Versailles Palace, with its rare and exotic fruit, immortalised in fabric!
In our blog, Madame Sajou’s Diary, discover the eventful history of these fabrics. You’ll also spot cheeky nods to two others: the chart dedicated to the Toile de Jouy and the chart dedicated to Napoleon and Josephine.
