Generally, the same threads are used for both hand sewing and machine sewing, with only the presentation varying. Spools are the most common presentation, but not the oldest. Threads can also be wound on reels, cones, kingspools, or even small cocoons, including miniature ones, which are a unique offering from Maison Sajou.

Traditionally, the largest number of sewing thread manufacturers were found in the North of France, now known as Hauts-de-France, with an almost infinite variety of brands.
