This cloth is also sometimes called oilcloth or waxcloth, from days gone by when linen or cotton fabric was covered with a linseed oil based varnish to make it waterproof. It was first produced in France by Eugène Maréchal, founder of the company of the same name, in Venissieux, near Lyon. Ets Maréchal went on to become Vénilia, a famous French brand of contact paper. During the '50s, vinyl and other modern products replaced the original waxed products, but the oilcloth denomination remains to this day. You will find here a large selection of toile de Jouy and Sajou coated fabrics in swatches of 50 x 70cm, perfect for toilet bags, pouches, small bags or even rain hats.
