The Sajou Albums: A 19th-Century Legacy
Here you will find re-editions of albums that made Monsieur Sajou famous in the 19th century. Jacques-Simon Sajou (1802–1882) was the first person in France to print embroidery pattern charts on a large scale. Until then, these patterns were only available in watercolour versions, inaccessible for most budgets.
His album editions earned him many awards and honours during the great industrial and Universal Exhibitions. The Sajou albums were published in series, with different formats and colours, each bearing an identifying number. However, it is not uncommon to find identical patterns in albums with different numbers, or conversely, different patterns in albums with the same number.
How can we tell the age of vintage Sajou albums? This is a frequently asked question, but the answer is complex: many different editions were printed over several decades. However, a useful clue is the address printed on the cover page.
You can find detailed explanations in Madame Sajou’s Diary, particularly in the article about the history of Maison Sajou.
