Ribbon embroidery is also called rococo embroidery, an architectural term for volutes and garlands full of fantasy. Ribbon embroidery exists in France since the 17th century. The ribbons were silk, the only fabric available in ribbon form. They were very fine and called comets, because of the resemblance to comet tails.
Many vintage embroideries were made of ribbons, rococo embroidery being traditionally embroidered on a satin base. The most popular were the very thin ribbons, also known as comets, which were used for embroidering flowers. The smaller details were then added in stem stitch or satin stitch.
Even if silk is a very noble textile, it is very fragile, especially when it is passed through the fabric. The polyester ribbons we propose are of great quality, made in France and have a similar aspect to silk.
Formerly, ribbon embroidery was made with very fine ribbons. Today, it is fun to associate ribbons of different widths. We recommend using an awl to pierce the fabric when using larger width ribbons. This will not only avoid damaging the ribbon, but also ensure that it is not too tight.
